Wide planks

Wide Plank Flooring

Wide planks, generally five inches across or wider, make a floor look calmer and more open. With fewer seams and fewer boards to look at, a large room reads as one surface instead of a pattern of narrow strips. That suits the open living, dining and kitchen layouts common in Central Florida homes.

Wide-plank options

  • LVP. Wide-plank vinyl is waterproof and installs over most subfloors, which makes it the practical choice for kitchens, laundry rooms and busy households.
  • Engineered hardwood. Real wood on a layered core. The layers resist the swelling and shrinking that can make wide boards cup or gap, which is why engineered is the safer wide-plank hardwood over a Florida concrete slab. White oak is a common choice.
  • Solid hardwood. Wide solid boards move more with changes in humidity, so they are best over a wood subfloor in a house with steady indoor humidity. If a solid wide plank isn’t a good match for your home, we’ll tell you.

What affects the cost

Wide planks can’t be priced from a chart, because several things move the number: the material you choose, the width and length of the planks, the species and grade of the wood, the condition and flatness of the subfloor, and how the floor is installed (floating, glued down or nailed). Wider planks also need a flatter subfloor, so prep work can add to the job. The only way to get a real number is an in-home estimate, and it’s free.

See the engineered hardwood, solid hardwood and LVP pages for more on each, or tell us about your room and we’ll recommend a plank width.
